I’m Mike Hall, a potter and ceramic artist living and working on Scotland Island in Pittwater, on the northern edge of Sydney. I create and fire my work at home, amidst the spotted gums on the eastern slopes of the island.

Craftsmanship is important to me, and I strive to ensure my work is not only functional but durable. I like to make pieces for daily use that become your go-to bowl, cup, mug or plate. With care, they should last you a lifetime.

I use commercial clay for functional domestic ware, which I fire to 1240 degrees Celsius. I formulate, test and mix my glazes from raw materials — including local clays, oxides and wood ash — and fire my work in a gas kiln I built myself.

Place, community, simple living and thoughtful use of materials are central to my work. Natural forms, processes, textures, patterns and colours are a constant inspiration.

I re-discovered clay in my ‘50s and feel privileged to be part of a wider community of artists and makers, so many of whom have shared many of their skills and experience over the years. I’m thankful for the support of a great community on Scotland Island, too, as well as those who value the work of contemporary artisans.

Place, community, simple living and considered use of materials are central to my work. Natural forms, processes, textures, patterns and colours are a constant source of wonder and inspiration.
